Oscar-winning actor Anthony Quinn played Omar Mukhtar in the film, which was financed by Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. “We are a nation that does not know the meaning of surrender.
The film quoted Al-Mukhtar as saying: “Either we win or we die.” These words were used on Libyan banners during the Arab Spring protests.

Omar Mukhtar (Arabic: عمر المختار )
(1862 – September 16 – 1931) was born in Manifa, in the small village of Janzour near Tobruk, in the Eastern Burqa (Serenica) in Libya, Libya.
In early 1912, he organized and led local resistance for nearly twenty years against the Italian colonies in Libya. The Italians captured and executed him in 1931.
Lion of the Desert is a 1981 Libyan historical action film starring Anthony Quinn as Libyan tribal leader Omar al-Mukhtar, a Bedouin leader fighting the Italian army in the post-World War II years, and Oliver Reed, an Italian.
